As the Gambia’s Truth Reconciliation and Raparations Commission (TRRC) wraps up its activities, the body will perform one more significant public event on June 28 when a ceremony to rename the Banjul Arch to The Memorial Arch will take place.
The initiative jointly coordinated by the TRRC, Banjul City Council BCC, the Coalition of Civic Society Organisations and the National Centre for Arts and Culture among others is designed to turn the arch to a place where victims of the Jammeh regime would be remembered.
According to a credible source, the arch would be renamed and changed to a memorial where names and (where possible pictures) of all those killed, disappeared or tortured under the Jammeh regime would be exhibited for posterity. Our source said the ceremony would be held on June 28 and is being planned to be “a very big, important but solemn ceremony to be attended by senior government officials, human rights bodies, families of victims among others”.
