Abdou Drammeh, the band master who spoke exclusively to The Standard said the band has been in Bakau for over two decades and it has been very active in promoting the rich culture of The Gambia.

He added: “Yes this is a band that was formed for almost 35 years now and the members include ballet dancers and drummers. It is not easy to work in a band but progress has been made. Many of our members have travelled to different places. Ballet and cultural dancing is very popular in the sub-region and we are trying to keep it alive. We are trying to promote Gambian music through the activities we do. We have faced some constraints especially on the financial side but we have been able to keep the band going.

“We have invited some big artistes to our anniversary which will take place on March 7 at Senatra’s Bar and Restaurant in Bakau. These artistes include Manding Morry, Nyancho and others. The stage is open to everybody. I want to thank my manager [Mr Limson Brown] because he is very hard working in trying to push the band to a higher ground. I also want to thank everyone for the support including the media and I want to call on everyone to come and support during the celebration.”

For his part, Kandra Susso, also a leader of the band said the day is all about celebrating the achievements of the band. He said the band master [Mr Drammeh] is his uncle and they are ready to support him in what he is doing.

“We are behind him and praying that he will succeed in what he is doing. I want to thank everyone for the support and encouragement to our cause which is to promote Gambian culture through music and traditional dance,” he added.
