Members of the organizing committee of the annual summer youth camp of Beakanyang on Thursday briefed the press about the annual youth gathering.
Speaking at a press conference held at the organization’s office in Churchill’s Town, Buba S. Njie, the publicity manager of the organization revealed that the camp for this year will be held from the 27-31 August 2018.
“The camp will be held at Nasir Senior Secondary School in URR and would attract over 50 young people from different walks of life,” he said.
Mr Tumani Danjo, acting director and program manager of Beakanyang, said the objective of the camp is to provide a unique platform for young people from diverse backgrounds to network and learn various disciplines and get inspired.
According to him, the theme for this year is ‘Making Human Rights Reality for All in The Gambia. “By teaching them their rights and things that can add value to their lives we hope to promote a culture of human rights and inspire these youth to become agents of change and take charge of their own destiny,” he said.
He added: “We would be having ten thematic areas namely; Human Rights, ICT in Development, Climate Change, Child Marriage, Entrepreneurship, Ethics, Drug and Substance Abuse, FGM and Illegal Migration”.
According to Danjo who also doubles as the chairman of the organising committee, this year Beakanyang is partnering with Aliue Darboe Foundation, Youth for Human Rights International, Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, Youth for Human Rights The Gambia and Basse Area Council to host the annual event.
He however called on more institutions, NGOs and government departments to support this noble cause in empowering the youth.
Chairman Danjo further informed the press that the participants at the camp will also travel to Nyakoi Kerewan, in Wuli West District to participate in a tree planting exercise.
“This year campers will participate in our annual tree planting exercise as they will help us plant about 1000 trees, and we will also distribute about 1000 copies of human rights booklets to the residents of Basse,” he noted.
Amadou Ceesay, program assistant of Beakanyang thanked members of the press for their continuous support to the annual event since it first started way back in 2014.
“As an organization we strive to promote young people´s active, responsible and continuous participation in national development,” he said.
He added: “We worked to create an inclusive society where all young people will be engaged, informed and inspired to take the challenge of actively participating in national development”.
“Finally, I would like to thank Aliue Darboe Foundation under the leadership of Mr Darboe for his commitment to the advancement of Gambian youth. In the same vein, we also like to salute Mr Nfamara Jawneh, our able executive director and human rights hero who is currently out of the country, for his support for the camp,” he concluded.
