The executive director of Beakanyang has called for concerted efforts to mitigate the effects of climate change.

Mr. Nfamara Jawneh was speaking recently at Jah Kunda in Wuli West District of Upper River Region during a field visit to a community woodland.

Speaking at the site, Mr. Jawneh commended the youth of Jah Kunda under the auspices of Kutay Jumbul Kafo for their commitment in mitigating the impact of climate change.

“We need more community efforts and local actions to mitigate the impact of climate change on our lives and livelihoods,” he said.

According to Mr. Jawneh, massive tree planting is key to climate change mitigation. He used the opportunity to hail the community for working with Beakanyang over the years to reduce vulnerability of community members to the effects of climate change.

Speaking earlier, the leader of Kutay Jumbul Ansumana Makalo said their main problem at the woodland is poor status of their fence thus called for support from development partners.

“We have hundreds of trees planted here with over 90 percent survival rate but animals are definitely undermining our efforts, “he lamented.

Mr. Jawneh after the tour of the woodland said he was happy that the trees are doing well and encouraged the group to keep up the momentum.

He further advised the group to put up a fire belt around the woodland to prevent fire from entering the garden.

“Also clear all the grasses in the garden and   keep watering the plants that are badly in need of water before they die. I’m definitely impressed with the level of commitment and the high level of survival rate of the trees planted,” he added.

Meanwhile, the 2-hectar woodland is the second of its kind own and managed by the youth of Jah Kunda thanks to the support of partners such as Beakanyang.

Mr. Jawneh concluded by assuring the young tree growers of Beakanyang’s continuous support to their cause while calling on other partners to also give them some support to preserve the environment.
