The prestigious trophy was conferred on the army at a glamorous ceremony at the Ocean Bay Hotel Saturday. Organised by a special National Organising Committee, led by Aboulie Kah, the gala completed the sporting aspect of the May Day Sports which also featured the Workers Union and other collaborators in the day that celebrated the welfare of workers.
Speaking at the occasion, a representative of the army said sports is taken very serious in the armed forces and it was only natural that they have won the championship this year again. He thanked the organisers and the various armed forces athletes who took part in the different disciplines.
Another trophy that enthralled the crowd was the cabinet’s trophy which they won in a special tug-of-war contest against the National Assembly.
This was received by Sports Minister Alieu Jammeh who invited cabinet colleague Mass Axi Gye, Workers Union boss Garba Cham and other dignitaries on the podium to receive it.
Meanwhile, The Standard conducted a vox- pop on the organisation of the May Day Sports with most people commending the organisation of the event even though some suggested the march past should shave started much earlier.
The very courteous staff of Ocean Bay Hotel ensured everyone ate gourmet meal while a life band played to while the hours away. The chairman of the organising committee, Abdoulie Kah, said he was delighted to have heard words of commendation and good advice on the organisation of the event. The gala and awards dinner was chaired by Ida Bah, advocacy officer at the National Sports council.
