The leader of the Thiantacounes, a sect of the Mouride brotherhood in Senegal, Cheikh Béthio Thioune, has reportedly passed away in Bordeaux, France after a long illness.

The controversial guide of the Thiantacounes went to France last January for medical care. The 81-year-old Thioune was on Monday sentenced to ten years with hard labour for complicity in the double murder in the so-called Médinatoul Salam case. He was convicted in connection to the murder in 2012 of two of his disciples who were killed before being buried in a mass grave in the bush.
