An Ecomig soldier rammed his pick-up truck into a three-wheel vehicle early yesterday morning, killing two people on the spot, and leaving several injured. The soldier was reported to have fled the scene at Mariama Kunda Junction on the Coastal Road highway leading to the airport junction when confronted by a mob.
Police have confirmed the episode, telling The Standard it involved an “Ecomig vehicle with registration number 47-GA-51 and a tricycle with registration number MC-WCR-4491,” being driven by one Muhammed K Bah.
Early speculations indicated at least four fatalities however, according to police, only two deaths have been confirmed. “Four others sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment at the hospital,” Spokesman ASP Lamin Njie said.
He said the police have opened investigations into the matter, saying “appropriate actions will follow”. An eyewitness who spoke to The Standard on the condition of anonymity, painted a graphic picture of the scene, saying some “body parts and heads were cut into pieces and were barely recognisable”.
