Erykah Badu pulls out of Roots jamboree

The NOC disclosed that two other “mighty” music stars called Scratchylus and Empress Reggae will now be performing at the jamboree together with Sizzla and Mutabaruka, on Saturday 10 May 2014 at the Independence Stadium.

The African-American superstar, regarded as the ‘Queen of Neo-Soul’ apparently pulled out following a campaign petition orchestrated by dissident Gambians and groups based in the United States and Europe.

Although neither Ms Badu nor the NOC gave a reason for the cancellation of her concert tour to The Gambia, her manager, Paul J Levanto, disclosed to a Gambian news site that she will not be performing at the Independence Stadium in The Gambia.

Musically, Erykah Badu’s work includes elements from R&B, hip hop and jazz. For her musical sensibilities, she has often been compared to jazz great Billie Holiday.  Badu’s style is a prime example of neo-soul, as she focuses on the contemporary styles of the genres, soul and hip hop.
