Gambia urged to reconsider quitting WAFU

Fox Sports Africa, sponsors of the on-going West Africa Football Union Wafu Nations’ Cup in Ghana has advised the Gambia not to carry out its threat of quitting Wafu over alleged unfair treatment at the hands of a referee.

The GFF announced it may consider quitting Wafu after what it called gross unfairness at the hands of the match official in the opening match against host Ghana. However Fox Sports’s senior advisor and TV commentator Barry Lambert said: “I know how much the Gambia FA president wants to develop football in Gambia and I know how much he wants to improve the game to get it high in African football. But I don’t think ignoring or boycotting WAFU or the competition itself, will help things”.

Meanwhile, the GFF President Lamin Kaba Bajo is among the 16 (WAFU) football presidents invited to a meeting today Friday in Accra for an evaluation and resolution meeting on the way forward of the regional football championship. ”I hope the recommendations we are about to be made this weekend will be accepted,” Barry said. It could be recalled that FOX Networks Group (FNG) entered into a partnership that will help develop football in both Wafu Zones A and B. This multi-million-dollar sponsorship package will enable each Zonal Union to host and organise a bi-annual Challenge Cup for Senior National teams with effect from 2017. This package will also provide Zonal Unions with the opportunity to organise other competitions for all categories – U-17, U-20, U-23 and Senior National teams (local players only) in every quarter of the year.

Meanwhile, the semifinal matches in the on going tourney were in progress as went to press yesterday with Ghana meeting Niger as Nigeria takes on Benin.
