Police and paramedics went to the apartment and found the woman lying on the bed. She had sustained injuries to her head and hands and was pronounced dead at the scene.

An initial investigation found that the Gambian had an argument with his wife in the morning and the woman had been beaten during a fight, Oriental Daily reported.

The couple slept on the bed until evening. When the suspect woke up he found his wife was unconscious.

The suspect then went to the Wong Tai Sin Police Station to report the case.

It was understood that the woman, who held a Hong Kong Identity Card, was a former domestic worker. The suspect came to Hong Kong in 2012 from The Gambia and has been staying in the city as an asylum seeker.

Post-mortem examinations will be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.
