A seasoned observer of international competitions yesterday hinted The Standard that it is very likely that Gambian Papa Gassama may officiate the final of the current African Nations Cup on Sunday. “I have no fore knowledge of the referees’ schedule ahead of its publication by Caf, but with his name not included in any of the semis, it is likely that he will take the whistle in the final,” our analyst said.
If he officiates in the final, Gassama will break another Gambian record- the first to take charge of the final of Africa’s biggest football meeting.
Already, he won the continent’s best referee award at the Caf award gala in Lagos back in January.
Meanwhile, the Gambia Football Federation GFF has announced they will formally organise a welcome ceremony for Gassama on his return next week. “A sub- committee headed by 2nd vice president Ebou Faye will coordinate the welcoming party,” a GFF statement stated yesterday.
The GFF also called on all Gambians to turn up at the welcome ceremony adding that the time and date of his arrival will be communicated later.]]>
