The Gambia Democratic Congress has confirmed that alliance talks with the Yahya Tamba-led APRC faction and Ganu of Sheikh Tijan Hydara are almost completed and the agreement could be signed before the start of nominations.

GDC is headed by Mamma Kandeh who was once expelled as APRC National Assembly Member for Jimara by President Yahya Jammeh.

He went on to set up the GDC and refused to join the grand coalition led by his former political sparring partner Adama Barrow who went on to defeat Jammeh at the polls in 2016.

GDC polled 17% of the votes coming a respectable third.

In another twist in the ever-changing political landscape as we inch towards election day on 4th December, Kandeh may end up teaming with the party of his former political nemesis Jammeh.

GDC youth leader Modou ‘MC’ Cham confirmed to The Standard yesterday that his party is likely to sign the agreement with the APRC-Ganu alliance today.

“I can confirm to you that the talks are 99 per cent done and it is highly likely that we will sign the MoU tomorrow [Friday]. We are now discussing who should lead the alliance,” he said.

Cham said both parties are treading cautiously wary of how Coalition 2016 panned out.  “We have learnt lessons from the 2016 coalition and we don’t want to repeat the same mistakes,” he said.

“We believe a coalition could be the only solution to remove Barrow and with Jammeh’s APRC faction and Ganu we are more than confident of winning the December election,” he added.

Officials of Ganu and the APRC faction were not available for immediate comment yesterday.
