A statement from the presidency said the president left with a high-powered delegation at around 05:30am on Monday. President Jammeh is expected to present The Gambia’s statement to the UN General Assembly in the coming days. The theme of the general debate of the 69th session is “Delivering on and Implementing a Transformative Post-2015 Development Agenda”. The assembly’s annual general debate provides member states including The Gambia the opportunity to express their views on major international issues.
It will open tomorrow, September 24 and run through Wednesday, October 1. The debate will bring together UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and president of the 69th UN General Assembly, Sam Kahamba Kutesa, who is also foreign minister of Uganda. US President Barack Obama will be the centre of great focus as he wants support for his plans for thwarting Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and an Ebola outbreak that has threatened the our Sub-region.
During the session, there will be high-level events devoted to climate change, Ebola and human rights. On September 24, the UN Security Council will hold a meeting on the problem of international terrorism under the presidency of the US president.
