Japan injects over D4.8m into Gambian sports

Speaking at the ceremony held at Olympic House, the president of the GNOC Alhaji Momodou Dibba said the agreement will allow the Olympic Committee to receive 90,000 Euros assigned to purchase  standard sports equipments for four Sporting associations namely athletics, basketball, handball and volleyball.

“Through this project, Japan intends to improve sports facilities for youth development in The Gambia,” he said.

GNOC president noted that the initiative came as a result of a meeting between Gambian IOC member Beatrice Allen and Japanese NOC president at which the president of the Japanese Olympic Committee Mr Takeira, agreed to support Gambian sports.

He said this project is the second approved project under the new scheme of cultural grassroots projects initiated and crystallised by the Gambia IOC member, Ms Beatrice Allen. 

The consul of the Japanese Embassy in Dakar, Mr Shigeru Kondo revealed Japan’s strong commitment to promote sports as a valuable tool for development  and peace for children and young people in The Gambia, within the framework of the Grant Assistance for Cultural grassroots Projects of Japan.
