The association of mainly Gambians and friends of The Gambia has been issued charity number 1158186, registered in England and Wales.
Commenting on the importance of charity status for his association, secretary general, Malang Darboe said: “The status will allow us to seek funding from organisations that give support to only legitimately registered charities. Such funding will improve the administrative capacity of the executive and organise workshops for the general membership to create awareness about certain community and cultural practices”.
Founded in June 2000 in Slough, UK, the association was working on a non-charitable status from 2006 until now.
Mr Darboe added: “We look forward to showcasing African culture in schools as a way of cultural education. There are advanced plans to secure funding to open a secretariat and a cultural centre in Bristol. Kombo Sillah Association has been helping with medical equipment and will always come handy during emergencies”.
