Your Excellency,

On the occasion of the Independence Day of the Republic of The Gambia, I wish to convey to you and the Government and people of The Gambia my warmest wishes, together with those of the Australian government and people.

Australia is pleased to assist The Gambia to meet its development priorities.  I am pleased that in 2014, candidates from The Gambia were offered two Masters-level scholarships and one short-term professional development course under the Australia Awards program in the areas of health, governance and international diplomacy.  Since 2010, more than 50 Gambians have received scholarships and fellowships to undertake study or training in Australia.  In addition, in 2014, The Gambia has benefited from an Australian-supported regional agriculture project to enhance food security in West Africa and a grassroots women’s economic empowerment programme in the town of Banjulinding.

The Australian government is committed to working with The Gambia in the year ahead, both bilaterally and through the multilateral system.  May I express my confidence that the friendly relations between our two countries will continue to prosper in the coming year.

Your sincerely

Peter Cosgrove
