Man arrested for allegedly raping 9-year-old girl

By Omar Bah

A 40-year-old man from Lamin village was on Saturday arrested for allegedly raping a nine-year-old girl. The girl is a Grade 3 student.

The accused, identified as just Pa, reportedly knew the girl’s family and was given the young girl to adopt.

It is believed that the incident happened on Thursday but she only reported it days after to the mum. The mother immediately reported the incident to the local police in Banjulinding.

The girl was shifted to hospital, where a medical examination was conducted, which revealed that she was sexually assaulted.

The accused is said to be currently helping police in their investigations.

According to the girl’s mother, the accused has been attempting to sexually assault her several times without success.

She said the 9-year-old is taken to Lamin for adoption by her stepmother.

“It was when I realised that she was not feeling well that I decided to interrogate her and during the process, she confessed to me that Pa had raped her. My daughter told me that the man always called her and showed her porn videos on his phone. She said one day when she was sleeping alone in the room, he sneaked into the room, undressed her and started penetrating her,” the emotional mother told The Standard.

“My daughter said the man told her not to report the matter to anyone. She said he threatened to put her in trouble if she reported it to anyone. So it was when she visited me that she had the courage to explain what happened,” she said.

When contacted for comments, the police spokesperson Superintendent Lamin Njie confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect is currently detained.

“We can confirm receiving the report and the matter is currently under investigation,” PRO Njie said.
