Mawlud Nabi ‘gaamo’ declared public holiday

State House, Banjul, 30 November 2017 – The Office of the President is pleased to inform the General Public that His Excellency, Adama Barrow, the President of the Republic of The Gambia has declared Friday, 1 December 2017 as public holiday throughout the country.

The holiday is in honour of Mawlud Nabi, locally called “gaamo” to commemorate the birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAWS) tomorrow night, Thursday, 30 November 2017. His birthday is commemorated by many Muslims around the world with recitation of the Holy Qur’an, religious songs and preaching about his life.

Prophet Muhammad (SAWS), son of Abdullah and Aminah was born in the holy city of Makka, in Saudi Arabia. He was married to his only wife Khadijah for 25 years before he later married others including Sawdah, Aisha, Hafsa, Zeinab. All his children died before him except Fatima, mother of his grandchildren, Hussein and Hassan.
President Barrow wishes to take this opportunity to wish the Muslim community a blessed holiday.
