Ministry to convene national conference to save Gambian football

According to a press statement issued over the weekend, the forum will be led by a consultant to be hired by MOYS to look into restructuring of the national football league, infusing the super nawettan with the current national league structure, abolishing the current structure and replacing it with the super nawettan structure and create a superior or premier league

According to the release, the forum will also discuss funding mechanisms, schools and grass roots football, development of technicians, coaches, referees and administrators as well as revisit the modalities of club ownership.

The ministry further stated that if all the above objectives are achieved, The Gambia will be better placed to prepare national teams to participate in the 2016 Olympic Games, the 2017 African Cup of Nations and the 2018 World Cup. The statement ended by calling on all stakeholders to forward suggestions, contributions and progressive ideas on the topics highlighted and register with the National Sports Council for logistical arrangements.

The ministry justified the move saying there was a need to get the direction of football back on track as was the case in the decade 1999 – 2009 when the national teams performed to appreciable level with the financial commitment of government, the private sector and private individuals.

This, it said, is opposed to the period from 2009 to date  when unavoidable hurdles had been placed retarding the progress of the continuous development of the sport, hence the current unpleasant scenario.
