The Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education MoBSE yesterday announced a ban on graduation ceremonies for nursery and lower basic schools across the country.
In a statement, the Ministry said the’ ‘extravagant and costly graduation events place undue financial burdens on parents and guardians, thereby contravening the “No Levy” policy.
“Accordingly, with immediate effect, all educational levels, such as Early Childhood Development (ECD)/Nursery, and Lower Basic Schools, are not permitted to hold graduation ceremonies.
In the same vein, Upper Basic and Senior Secondary Schools are required to conduct their Speech and Prize Giving Ceremonies in a manner that minimises financial strain on parents” the Ministry directed.
It also said students are required to wear their regular school uniforms during ceremonies, stressing that the use of gowns or formal attire will not be permitted, and also, all ceremonies must be held on the school grounds to avoid additional costs associated with the use of external venues.
“Furthermore, schools are strictly prohibited from organising parties or social gatherings after the Speech and Prize-Giving Ceremonies, and students must not be compelled to attend any such events,” it said.
The Ministry also urged all schools to comply fully with these guidelines to ensure that students’ achievements and accomplishments are celebrated in a dignified and inclusive manner without imposing financial burden on their families which could be responsible for the exclusion of some deserving students.
