The disciples of Serigne Abdou Fatah reacted following what they considered disrespectful remarks made by Mr Lô the vice president of the Senegalese National Assembly against the marabout. According to local press, on Saturday the police evacuated the Lô family to the capital, Dakar, 194 km from Touba.
Here are some titles offered by the Senegalese press on this matter: “Cissé Lô in Danger Touba. One of His Relatives Seriously Injured. His Family Evacuated “; “Vandals on the Lookout for El Pistolero”, “Cissé Lô Escapes Stoning”; “Moustapha Cissé Lô’s Touba Destroyed.”
Moustapha Cissé Lô nicknamed” El Pistolero” has since issued a statement saying taped recordings purportedly of him making disparaging remarks about Serigne Abdou Fatah Mbacké son of one of the most revered of the Mourid caliphs, Serigne Fallou Mbacké, were fakes.
Moustapha Cissé Lô has challenged the head of state and other authorities to ensure that he gets justice and has assessed the damages to his properties at more than one billion francs. “That is all I am demanding, “neither more nor less, as Senegal is a country of law”, he said.
The Standard has learnt that at least 19 people have since been arrested and released over the matter. The police are said to be investigating the case.
The militant members of the Mourid sect, the most powerful brotherhood in Senegal have burnt mosques and properties for slights or barbed comments directed at their revered leaders.
