Pa Kalifa Sanyang, the Chief Executive Officer of Kanifing Municipality Council has disclosed to the National Assembly Select Committee on Regional Government Land, IEC and Ombudsman that NAWEC has disconnected the council’s electricity supply and they are even threatening to cut the water supply too.
“The D84 million arrear is in respect of the street lights. As we speak we are using generator which is not reliable,” he added.
CEO Sanyang explained that they have contacted their legal department about the development. “They have emphatically made it clear to us that NAWEC has no right to disconnect us for the fact that our headquarters is not owing them,” he posited.
Sanyang noted that NAWEC is demanding for the Council to pay D1.8 million dalasi a month. “In fact they are giving us a bill of D2.8milion dalasi. The most interesting part of it is the fact that we have written to NAWEC in order for them to show us the street meter but they failed to reply,” he said.
He said they still don’t know where the meter is located because they want their staff to read it for accountability purpose but Nawec has not responded.
