The government announced yesterday that the first phase of the public registration and issuance of new Biometric National Identity Cards for citizens aged 18 years and older, has started since Augustt 4, in Banjul, Kanifing, Bundung, Abuko, Brusubi, Sanyang and Brikama, where the highest registration demand is anticipated.
The government statement also revealed that deployment will be extended to Sibanor and Jarra Soma, from Monday 7th September
The roll-out for the North Bank Region, covering Barra, Kerewan and Farafenni and Central River Region-North (Kaur), will commence on Friday 11th September.
According to the statement the rollout will start in the Central River Region-South (Janjanbureh) and Upper River Region, covering Basse and Fatoto from Monday 21st September, 2026.
“The fee for a first-time National Identity Card is D450 to be paid at any Ecobank branch across the country while holders of a valid and unexpired ID may replace existing cards at no cost during this rollout process,” the statement said.
It said applicants must present either a valid Gambian passport; birth certificate; or a valid or expired National Identity Card previously issued by The Gambia Immigration Department.
According to the Department, applicants who do not possess any of the above documents must be identified and vouched for by both the Alkalo (Village head) and the Seyfo (District Chief) of their place of residence or origin to establish their eligibility for registration.
