New speaker, Assembly members unveiled

All new National Assembly speaker and 57 other elected and nominated members were yesterday unveiled at a spectacular ceremony at the assembly building.

The historic occasion started with election of a speaker in the person of Mariam Jack Denton who took the chair after Momodou Lamin K Sanneh declined nominations for the position. Mr Sanneh became deputy speaker while Kebba K Barrow, member for Kombo South was elected majority leader. NRP’s Samba Jallow was overwhelmingly elected as minority leader.

Speaking after taking her oaths administered by the Chief Justice, Madame Denton promised to do her utmost best to serve and perform her duties accordingly and as expected.

“It is indeed pleasure and deep sense of humility that I wish to accept the position of speaker of this August assembly, in doing so I would like to assure you that I shall at all times endeavor to uphold the provisions of the constitution of the republic and the standing orders of the national assembly in the performance of my duties and responsibilities as speaker of this August body,” Denton said.

She added: “I shall also strive to discharge these functions with the impartiality expected of the office of the speaker and to maintain the dignity of the office”.

Meanwhile the complete official list of the nominated members was read to the assembly as follows: Ma Janko Samusa, Momodou LK Sanneh, Ndey Yassin Secka, Kumba Jaiteh and Mariama Jack Denton.
