The Commonwealth will send a mission of election observers to The Gambia, for the first time since the country returned to the body after the ousting of former president Yahya Jammeh. The former dictator withdrew The Gambia from the English-speaking family following the organization’s criticisms of his poor human rights record and autocratic leadership.

A source close to the Inter-Party Committee, a body representing all political parties in the country, said the Commonwealth team will be led by Olusegun Obasanjo, the former president of Nigeria who is expected to arrive in Banjul on November 29.
