Ports dropped to Confederations Cup

By Modou Lamin Beyai The Gambia Ports Authority have been knocked out of the 2017 CAF Champions League after losing 2-0 in DR Congo against AS Vita Club on Sunday afternoon. The return leg of the match, played at the 80,000 capacity Stade des Martyrs at 15:30 GMT, saw the hosts open the lead in the 40th minute through Rwandan forward Ernest Sugira before Equatorial Guinea defender Francisco Obama Ondo, who scored in the 1st leg in Banjul and whom GPA launched an appeal against, rose high to nod in a corner past Christopher Allen on goal. The Gambian champions, who visibly played a back three in Kinshasa, were dominated in the match in a near full stadium. They result means they lost 3-1 on aggregate and have now dropped to the Confederations Cup where they’ll feature in the play-off round scheduled for the weekend of 7-9 April with a yet-to be drawn opponent. The Confederations Cup play-off round includes 32 teams: the 16 winners of the Confederation Cup first round and the 16 losers of the Champions League first round.]]>
