“A thorough investigation is underway so that this unfortunate event is clarified. Be assured that necessary measures will be taken and the investigation will be carried out until everything is known. Meanwhile, I’m appealing for calm and serenity,” Macky Sall said in an address to the press on Sunday evening.
President Sall who just returned back from France, pledged that the government would do everything possible to support the country’s university system with a budget of more than 40 billion FCFA francs per year, which would be exclusively allocated and spent on granting scholarships.
“Presently, about 3.347 billion FCFA has been paid into 62,500 student’s bank accounts between December 2013 to June 2014,” he added.
The head of State also reiterated his willingness to receive all stakeholders of the university. The clashes that led to the death of Bassirou Faye also left several injured, both students and police. According to the independent union of higher education (SAES), 27 students are still detained at Dakar central police headquarters.
