Addressing a gathering at the launching of the first lady, Zineb Jammeh’s ‘Operation Save The Children’ at Kairaba Beach Hotel, Friday evening, the Gambian leader said: “Even before I became the president it has been my dream that no child in The Gambia suffers. We will now make it a capital punishment for raping a child. Perpetrators of abuses have now moved from raping adults to children. Protecting a child goes beyond just saving him or her from violence. The best assurance to ensure that a child is protected is education. Rape of whatever form will not be tolerated by my government. The increase in baby dumping in the country has become rampant and stringent measures will be taken against the menace.
“They have no reason for dumping their babies. The baby commits no offence to be killed. If you cannot take your babies, then take them to the SoS Children’s Village or bring them to State House. Baby dumpers have no right to dump their babies, and if they do, they will spend the rest of their lives in jail. In addition to the launching of the first lady’s foundation, I am also going to launch ‘Operation No Compromise in the Protection of Children’. Enough is enough!” the president announced with rapturous applause.
