The Gambia Commission for Refugees has commenced a nationwide refugee verification exercise designed to get an accurate data on refugees.
The Assistant Public Relation officer at the Gambia Immigration Department, Inspector Ismaila Jammeh has revealed that this exercise would help the government to map out strategic plans for refugee protection in the Gambia.
According to him, this exercise is as a result of the new government of the Gambia’s appeal to United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) at the Executive committee meeting (EXCOM) held in Geneva in 2017 for verification of the refugees in the Gambia.
He stated that this exercise would be in two phases: phase one of the exercises is for refugees in 81 villages residing in Foni and would start from the 3rd to 21st April while the second phase is for urban refugees which would start from 24th to 26th April 2018.
