Match Day Two in the African Nations Cup qualifiers between Gambia and Algeria in Group D is already hyped to be one of the most interesting fixtures on the continent. The Algerians missed the last world Cup in Russia and have since dropped from being Africa’s top ranking team, but the North Africans remain one of the biggest teams in Africa. With top players in the biggest leagues in Europe, and a new coach, the urge for a revival cannot be more urgent. A host of experienced players are named for Saturday’s almighty clash in Banjul against minnows Gambia. These include Riyad Mahrez of Manchester City, Yacine Brahimi of Porto and Islam Slimani of Fenerbahce.
Algeria are level with Benin at the top of Group D of qualifying for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations after an opening 1-0 victory over Togo.
The Gambia too is in a new era with Belgian coach appointed to engineer a revival of the country’s football. Young sensation Musa Barrow and established names like Pa Modou Jagne, Tijan Jaiteh are gingered up to execute the new coach’s plot to embarrass the North Africans here in Banjul.
