Gambian Afro-Manding rap star, ST Brikama Boyo, is on a contract tour of the southern Senegalese region of Casamance.  He made his tour announcement in a recent video posted on his social media page, showing him being welcomed by a  throng of fans in Bambali, Casamance

The rapper told Standard Lite the tour is “a big catch for the Gambian music” as this is the first time a Gambian artiste of his standing has been booked for a concert tour of such magnitude in the region. “It’s also a way to connect with our fans through live performances. It’s a plus that Gambian artistes are being booked in other countries like Senegal to perform and it helps boost the industry, as it is a paid contract which to me is an amazing gesture.”

ST said he has been booked to play in four places including Kolda three days after Tobaski. “I performed in the Casamance two years ago but this is more of an official contract. I have been receiving calls to perform in some places, in fact we have to see how to manage to cover all those places because we have concerts everywhere,” the thrilled singer quipped.

Asked whether he will be performing at any gigs in The Gambia in the coming festivities,  he replied: “The Gambia will always be home, so we get something cooking every time, every year. It’s been like the eighth year we have been doing salibo special. We do it after every Tobaski. These are regular shows we do for our people.”

Oboy shoots two vids in Senegal

oboy and chid

Afro-Manding duo O boy and Gambian Child did two music videos in Senegal, as  part of their recently released eight-track album Jutunaya.

Oboy told Standard Lite it has not been easy to shoot an album of eight tracks all at once because it requires huge capital investment. “We decided to start with two songs in Senegal one of which is a song by Gambian Child titled Pardon and a love song that we did together. Our main objective right now is to have all our songs in the album with music videos before we release it for the fans,” he said.

The videos for the remaining tracks will be shot in The Gambia. Among them is the song Sadio Mané, dedicated to the Senegalese football star.

The song Pardon (pronounced parr-don) by Gambian Child, has been given a French title translating it as “Excuse me”. According to him the song is about childhood and society. “I was inspired to do this song because of people’s perceptions or rather misperceptions about children.  For example, if a child is born and has good manners then he or she is loved by parents and the wider family, but if he or she turns out to be a crack head or misses his or her way,  then he or she becomes the child of only his or her birth mother. Alone! The song is also about parents who neglect the education of their children and instead send them on the streets to sell ice water or roasted peanuts,” he complained.

Oboy announced: “We will be releasing one of the songs before Tobaski and the other one after Tobaski. God willing, we will release videos for all the tracks in the album at the end of every month from now.”
