Veteran politician Halifa Sallah, one of the coordinators of the Team Gambia coalition, yesterday revealed that the group is going to adopt the successful 2016 coalition model whereby the flagbearer of the coalition will resign from his or her party to contest as independent candidate.
Sallah told a press conference yesterday that this was the only model that succeeded in changing a government through the ballot box since independence, referring to election of incumbent Adama Barrow over Yahya Jammeh.
However according to Sallah, Team Gambia will go all the way to avoid what he calls “pitfalls” of coalition.
On concerns about lateness as other major parties have already formed their coalitions, Sallah said they have been on consultations since March.
“I do not think we were late in starting but the method in building coalition is what is different. We believe no coalition can endure without consultation until we agree on common values and standards, and oaths. And all these partners here, have agreed on those values, standards and oaths,” Sallah said.
