One Sammuel Correa has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by a High Court in Banjul after he was found guilty of raping his niece .
The same court also sentenced Sammuel to serve two years imprisonment for indecent assault.
In passing sentence, the trial judge disclosed that the act of the convict was malicious and reckless.
Justice Ebrima Jaiteh said rape and indecent assault of women and young girls is becoming rampant in the society and it is deeply troubling and has the potential to create fear in women and girls to move freely in society.
He further said that he found the convict repentant and will not impose the statutory maximum sentence but he minded to temper justice with mercy.
He stated that the convict should be taught a lesson to deter others and he was sentenced accordingly.
Sammuel Correa together with one Charles Correa were arraigned before the High Court on charges of rape and indecent assault.
The prosecution called 5 witnesses and tendered 4 documents to prove the case but the court declared that from the totality of the evidence adduced in the trial, Charles Correa was not found guilty of the offence charged but Sammuel Correa was found guilty on both counts.
