Ajax United, a female team based in Penyem village has been crowned champions of the Gambia Sport Foundation (GSF), a Gambian-Netherlands Charitable Trust fitness tournament.
The tournament, which brought together teams within Penyem and surrounding villages, was hosted in Penyem.
Ajax clinched the trophy 3-0 on penalties over Penyem FC after the scintillating final ended goalless. Each of the participating teams was given a ball and a set of jerseys as rewards for their participation.
The six-team tournament, according to the Gambia Sport Foundation manager Yankuba Vermeulen, is part of their mandate to promote female grassroots football in The Gambia.
He said it may be hard to believe women sports, especially football can be popular one day in the Gambia, “but with a slow interest of emerging millenniums one can possibly have faith in the future.”
“Apart from organizing football tournaments, I also recruit players for the various female clubs in the country because I see lots of women who have interest in football but they don’t have the needed support,” he said.
