Following the declaration of a state of public emergency state of emergency declared by the President Adama Barrow, the Mayor of Banjul Rohey Malick Lowe Monday launched the Banjul Relief Initiativeaimed at mitigating the unforeseen circumstances that lie ahead of the coronavirus pandemic.
The initiative is in response toa possible food shortage in the event that that State of Emergency is extended. Mayor Lowe told a cross-section of journalists at the BCC that things are not the same any longer “as people are now advised to stay at home unless they are in need of their basic necessities”.
The Mayor observed thatthese measures would mean that some inhabitants who live by the day will find life difficult hence the need for a relief package to cushion the economic loss to their families. She also described the Initiative as a contingency plan to support the vulnerable households as Ramadan is fast approaching.
“We are aware that these are difficult times for everyone”, Mayor Lowe said,calling on institutions and individuals to support the Banjulinitiative to create a ‘Food Bank”as part her plans to mitigate the consequences of Covid-19 restrictions.
She thanked natives of Banjul who supported the initiative which she said will benefit the less fortunate members of the Banjul society.
