Prof Alie is leading three other scholars from FBC who are attending the workshop. The others are Yeabu Bundu, Foday Jalloh and Fobay Joseph.

Fourteen Gambian and four Sierra Leone scholars underwent the two-day workshop on scholarly writing at the University of The Gambia in Brikama. The workshop was animated by five renowned scholars based in the UK and the Netherlands, and representing academic peered-reviewed journals: namely Reg Cline-Cole, Review of African Political Economy; Michel Doortmont, History in Africa; Toby Green, Portuguese Studies; Murray Last, Africa; John Parker, Africa/SOAS Bulletin.

Dr Alie is the author of numerous books on Sierra Leone history such as the famous A Short History of Sierra Leone which is standard text in schools and universities in Sierra Leone. Among his numerous students are many Gambians who attended FBC before the Gambia had a university, and of course many Sierra Leoneans residing and working in The Gambia.

Funded by the African Studies Association of the UK and the British Academy, and hosted by the UTG and National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC), the workshop seeks to hone the skills of the participating scholars in academic writing, and to encourage them to publish their work in international journals, thereby increasing their access to these journals and the dissemination of knowledge produced in Africa.
