The Chairman of Brikama Area Council, who was recently expelled by the United Democratic Party, has refuted reasons given by the party for his expulsion.
“They [UDP] claimed that I was not active in the party but I can tell you that I have been in the UDP since 1996. I think photos can bear me witness. Photos can speak for themselves,” Sheriffo Sonko said.

Asked if he felt disappointed by a party that he claimed to be a member of for more than two decades and whether this may deflect his attention from his mandate, Mr. Sonko said: “What I can tell you is that I am the chairman of the Brikama Area Council and I’m doing my work. I don’t want to talk much now. What I can tell you is that the UDP has sent me a dismissal letter signed by Lamin Ndambu Dibba. I am still the chairman of the Brikama Area Council.”

Asked whether he nurses any ambition to seek BAC chairmanship in the event of a by-election and if he would now officially join the NPP, Chairman Sonko said: “I don’t have much to say right now. The only thing I can confirm to you right now is that the UDP has sent me a dismissal letter but we’ll talk about it later. Right now, I am doing my work as the chairman of Brikama Area Council.”

Meanwhile according to UDP, Chairman Sheriffo Sonko was indifferent to the party since his election into office. UDP spokesman Almamy Taal recently told The Standard that Sonko’s activities were not in conformity with party principles since his election on a UDP ticket.
