They were sentenced to a fine of D50, 000 each in default to serve a jail sentence of five years .They were further charged D5000 each on a charge of cheating in default to serve a jail term of one year as well as a compensation of D50, 000 to Gamtel.
Lawyer Kebba Sanyang ,in his mitigation, entreated the court to exercise its discretion in ensuring justice without imposition of custodial sentence on his clients.
“The convicts are first time offenders and it is also in evidence that the convicts were also remorseful by accepting the charges without wasting the valuable time of this honourable court. I pray the court to impose a sentence that would give the convicts the opportunity to regain their freedom as they were in custody all along. The punishment must fit the crime as the items recovered will be valuable to the state, “he enunciated.
The director of public prosecution, Saleh Barkun then furnished the court with the history of the case while tendering a host of equipments used by the convicts .
Cautionary and voluntary statements, the inventory of the items and the assessment loss incurred to Gamtel were tendered without objection raised from the defence.
