Willem Roodhart gave the revelation in the Upper River Region recently during the inauguration and renaming of the Basse bypass-Sabi road.

He said other roads financed under the 9th and 10th European Development Fund (EDF), include the Mandinba-Seleti Road, the Trans-Gambia Highway, the Soma-Basse Road and the Barra-Amdallai Road.

Roodhart noted that the total amount of 76.5 million Euros was invested from the 9th as well as the 10th EDF of the Gambian and Senegalese National Indicative Programmes, as well as the Ecowas Regional Indicative Programme. He said the project contributes to the strengthening of regional integration in Western Africa.

The European Union project manager pointed out that these funds would not have been available without the generosity of the 28 member states of the EU. According to him, in order to reduce the tear and wear on roads, weighing stations for axle load control have a major role to play, in limiting the weight of trucks crossing the country. He adds: “In fact, this is a recommendation from ECOWAS since it is well known that a road will degrade very quickly if such control mechanisms are not implemented.”

He gave assurance of EU’s continuous commitment to assist the people of The Gambia and the Gambian Government in their development drive.
