The Gambia government has given instructions for the police to investigate the alleged bribery scandal at the Fisheries ministry, according to Ebrima Sankareh, Government spokesman.
In an exclusive interview with The Standard, Mr Sankareh said as of Tuesday, the Government has directed that the matter be investigated.
Mr Sankareh also confirmed that the man at the centre of the bribery scandal, PS Bamba Banja, has been sent on administrative leave, pending the outcome of police investigations.
Banja has been in the media firestorm since an audio widely believed to be his voice in a telephone conversation with an unnamed minister discussing an alleged bribery transaction, was leaked and reported in the media.
Meanwhile, the report of an earlier investigation into a fire outbreak at the same ministry, is ready, and expected to be submitted this week.
