Senegal’s anti-corruption court has also imposed on him a fine of 222 million US dollar.

Mr Wade, 47, was found guilty of illegally amassing about 1.4 billion US dollars during his father’s 12-year reign.

Karim was an influential minister in his father’s government – in charge of infrastructure and energy projects.

Although he had maintained his claim of innocence throughout the two-year high profile trial, the judge Henri Gregoire Diop said there was evidence that Karim had hidden away funds in offshore companies in the British Virgin Islands and Panama.

The verdict came barely two days after his father’s party, PDS, selected Karim as their candidate for upcoming presidential election slated for 2017.

Abdoulie Wade, who has already described his son as political prisoner, is expected to react to the sentencing on Friday.
