Many businesses have suffered in the last 22 years with dozens of them arbitrarily closed or forced to move somewhere.
The realities at the time had created a suffocating environment which made it almost impossible for businesses to emerge and or thrive.
However, despite the hostile environment, the Gambia Chamber of Commerce and Industry has played a pivotal role in helping businesses remain effective in the sector.
As the voice of the business community, the Chamber has kept the sector alive and active which motivated and attracted investors from across the country and beyond.
Among the incentives used to attract investors and motivate businessmen and women was the introduction of awards.
This initiative has been a remarkable success since its inception and businesses have benefited the fitting awards and recognition.
Another successful initiative is the Trade Fair which has now become an international business event in the country.
In each annual event, individuals and groups from within and outside the country converge on the Independence Stadium to showcase and sell their products.
This has given a big plus to the business sector and the economy. This year again, business activities are in full swing at the stadium for the annual trade fair. The Standard calls on the leaders of the organisation to keep it up. The growth of businesses in this country partly depends on the effectiveness of the organisation.
