Principal magistrate Omar Cham of the Brikama Magistrates’ Court recently convicted and sentenced one Hamat Ceesay to a fine of D5,000 in default to serve five years imprisonment after pleading guilty to seriously assaulting a lady in Farato village.
The court also ordered Ceesay to pay D15,000 as compensation to the victim in default to serve another one year imprisonment.
According to the prosecution led by Cadet Inspector Kemo Y. Manneh, the incident happened in October, 2019 after the victim Fatou Secka, had a bitter argument with her stepmother and she was asked to leave the compound.
He said when Fatou met Hamat at a shop, he asked her what exactly transpired between her and the stepmother. Fatou referred him to the stepmother. This angered Hamat who could not control himself. He then started punching her on the nose and she bled. Fatou shouted for help after which she was escorted to Kanifing General Hospital where she was treated. She later travelled to Senegal for further medical treatment.
