On the Faraba report

The investigations into the fatal shootings in Faraba sometime this year have been completed and the report has been submitted to the His Excellency President Adama Barrow.

It could be recalled that there was an altercation between villagers in Faraba and the Julakay Mining Company which resulted in an exchange between members of the Police Intervention Unit and the youth of the village.

That incident resulted in the deaths of three young people from that village. The president then set up a commission to investigate the incident and its causes. There was a lot of hue and cry when the PIU used what was referred to by many as deadly force to disperse angry youths from the vicinity of the company.

Now that the investigation has been duly completed and the report handed over to the president, it is hoped that the presidency will, as a matter of urgency, make the findings public. The citizens await the publication of that report for it to serve as a lesson for other parts of the country but also serve as a deterrent to other members of the armed and security services.

It has also come to the notice of the public that the report on the Kanilai incident, which led to the demise of one Haruna Jatta, had been submitted to the president. It is hoped that the Office of the President will soon make both reports public as that was the reason for instituting such investigations in the first place.

These reports can therefore serve as a preventive measure to ensure that incidents like that do not happen in the country again.
