According to Senegalese daily L’Observateur, a canoe carrying 200 passengers exploded Friday night off the coast of Mbour leaving 59 survivors, 6 of whom were minors and more than 100 missing.
It is believed that one of the engines of the canoe broke down and as the crew were busy restarting the canoe, the engine exploded and caught fire.
In the stampede that followed the fire, drums and gasoline cans, which were in the boat, also exploded. The canoe split into part in pieces and capzised. The circumstances of the accident are being investigated. It is not immediately known whether ther are any Gambians.
