Papa Faal denied bail, Sidiya Bayo still in Senegal

Details of Faal’s bail hearing, which was held yesterday at the Minnesota US District Court in Minneapolis, are sketchy at the time we went to press. It has been reported that the presiding judge transferred the case to a grand jury for trial.

Faal stands accused of ‘conspiring against a friendly nation and conspiring to possess firearms’, alongside another US citizen of Gambian descent, Cherno Njie. This was when they travelled from The Gambia, where ‘they had travelled to help launch a December 30 coup attempt against President Yahya Jammeh’s government’, according to the US Justice Department.

Meanwhile, this paper has learnt that Sidiya Bayo, a French Gambian dissident who was scheduled to be deported by the Senegalese authorities since Wednesday was still in Senegal. Reports monitored from that country said Bayo’s expulsion was delayed as he claimed to have lost his passport.
