By Maimuna Sey-Jawo Phoenix organization in Upper River Region has taken the lead to sensitize communities in the region on the dangers attached to migrating to the Europe through the Mediterranean Sea. The forum recently held in the URR was supported by all and sundry in order to make it a success and create more awareness about the dangerous journey. According to the organizers, the latest to extend their support were Friends of Basse, Innovations for Community Support and those in the Diaspora. This is meant to ease the financial burden on this youth group to reach all their targeted communities in the URR. Mamadou A H Bah, speaking at the event, narrated the tragedy that befell Basse last year when young people from the area drowned in the sea trying to reach Europe. “The bitter side of life greeted us with the death of ten youths who were hoping for greener pastures in Europe but were taken away from us by the cold hands of death. With this in mind, Phoenix, who also lost their friends and loved ones, have taken it upon themselves to sensitize the youths on the dangers associated with this Back-way issue where most of our skilled and talented young people are losing their lives,” he stated. “Brother and sister, our lives are more precious than the so-called greener pastures in Europe and we have to understand it’s only with life that we can unlock any door to success. Personally, I know some people who are now multi-millionaires but have not gone to Europe, America or Asia. It’s just a matter of setting a personal goal, pray for God’s guidance and work tirelessly towards achieving your goal and I encourage you that you will succeed here in The Gambia; you will be that millionaire you want to be,” he added. He thanked the organizers and urged them to continue doing more sensitization to change people’s mind.]]>
