Singapore separated from Malaysia in 1965, the same year The Gambia attained independence from Britain. Like The Gambia, Singapore is a small country but has developed rapidly, earning recognition as one of the four Asian tigers.
Although the former president, Jawara, has had a stated policy of transforming The Gambia into Singapore of Africa, it was not until Friday – 20 years after his regime – that the two countries entered into formal diplomatic ties.
