The championship which starts on Augusts 6 is the biggest meeting of African Athletics held every four years.
According to Gambia Athletics Association, GAA president, Dodou Joof, Adama, a sprinter and Omar, a middle distance runner, 800m are both currently among some 20 African athletes from the IAAF high performance centers undergoing training in Morroco ahead of the championship.
“We are lucky that both boys are on IAAF high performance training programme in Dakar which facilitated their participation in the championship. ‘We would have loved to go with more talented athletes but funding is not available. Normally the Gambia National Olympic Committee takes much of the finance but as you know that body is not in position right now to do that. We also wrote to the Ministry of Youth and Sports but with only a few days before the championship it looks like funding is not there for us to take more athletes,” the GAA boss lamented.
