The Women Empowerment Foundation has last week donated a trip of sand, bags of cement worth D80.000 and facilitated cost of machinery to build a fence between the female and male wings at the facility.

This was necessitated against the backdrop of male patients sneak into the female ward at night.

The CEO of the organisation, Mai Kanyi said the group is a charity organisation that generates funds from monthly contribution amongst members both national and international, whose main objective is to help women in the organisation and also Gambian women in need.

Mrs Kanyi said the issue at hand dates back to 2019 but due to financial difficulties during the past years and the outbreak of Covid-19 the group was unable to complete the task.

“Living as a mentally ill person in our society is challenging, that’s why we took it upon ourselves to come to render our help to the facility”.

Fatou Bojang, vice president of the organisation said the organisation’s help is geared towards the welfare of women mainly in the labour rooms, the mortuary and prisons to enhance their living conditions in these facilities.

Nyima Cessay, treasurer of the organisation said the main purpose of establishing the organisation six years ago is to empower women in society especially those in need like Tanka Tanka and they have been doing so at different facilities throughout the country.

“We have been given a ward at the Brikama general hospital named after Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara where we donated valuables and created a partition, curtains between the labour ward and other wards to enable the safety of women in labour rooms”.

Aminata Ceesay, a member of the organisation said Tanka Tanka needs assistance with their sewage system and a bathroom for men and women and other issues totalling D250.000. She therefore called on other organisations to emulate their group to help improve the conditions of these patients.
